Dear Colleague!77
At last I’m able to thank you personally for the kind letter you wrote me on the occasion of Toni Wolff’s death. On the day of her death, even before I had received the news, I had a bad relapse of my tachycardia.78 This has now subsided but it left an arrhythmia which very much impedes my physical capacities. Now I’ve risked going to Bollingen over Whitsuntide, and I hope to recover here a bit more.
T. W. died so suddenly and so entirely unexpectedly that one could scarcely realize her disappearance. I had seen her two days earlier – both totally unsuspecting. As early as mid-February I had Hades dreams, which I related entirely to myself, because nothing pointed to Toni. None of the people who were close to her had any warning dreams, while people in England and Germany did, and in Zurich only some who knew her merely superficially.
At the beginning of my illness in Oct. 52 I dreamt of a big black elephant who uprooted a tree. (Since then I have written a rather long essay about the “philosophical tree.”)79 The primordial uprooting of trees can also mean death. Since that time I have dreamt several more times of elephants, whom I always had to go carefully around. Apparently they were occupied with road construction.
Your news interested me very much. The Ordinarius80 for Old Testament at the university here is discussing my Job in a seminar. One can regard “Job” from different sides, of course. What mattered to me this time was the human relationship to God, that is, the God-image. If God’s consciousness is clearer than human consciousness, then creation makes no sense and humanity has no purpose for existence. Then indeed God does not play dice, as Einstein says, but has invented a machine, which is even worse. In fact, the creation story resembles an experiment with dice more than anything intentional. These insights probably signify an enormous change of the God-image.81
“Synchronicity”82 should appear in English soon. Psych. & Alch.83 is finally out.
The clinical practice of psychotherapy is a mere expedient, which prevents numinous experiences as much as possible. To a certain extent things can also go all right this way. But there will always be cases which go beyond this, even among the physicians.
The “white stone” (calculus albus)84 occurs in the Apocalypse as a symbol of election.
The model of the Self in Aion is based on Ezekiel’s vision!85
With best greetings, Yours truly, C. G. JUNG
P.S. Recently I saw your wife at the Club, when I went back for the first time to attend a lecture.
